6 Common Things Which Cause Insomnia
Many millions of people suffer from insomnia and here we look at perhaps the 6 most common causes of this common sleep disorder.
Insomnia is an extremely common sleep disorder which is characterized by interruptions to sleep, shortened sleeping time, restlessness and on occasions by complete wakefulness.
Aside from being very annoying, insomnia can result in sufferers losing their energy and enthusiasm, developing memory and concentration difficulties and feeling lethargic and frustrated. In turn this can lead to a reduction in work productivity and to accidents which may well have serious consequences.

There are a host of different things that can cause insomnia but here look at just 6 which are commonly linked to this sleep disorder:
1. Environmental Factors. Our environment is very important when it comes to sleep and things like noise, light or extremes of temperature can lead to insomnia.
2. Substance Abuse. Possible the most obvious of all forms of substance abuse in relation to insomnia is coffee and other drinks such as tea and colas which contain high levels of caffeine. Another commonly accepted cause is smoking with heavy smokers consuming more than enough nicotine to result in problems sleeping. What is possibly not so well known however is that this list of substances is extensive and even boasts several herbal remedies used for a wide range of diverse problems and which can produce insomnia as a side effect. We should also not forget alcohol. Although it is certainly true that alcohol can frequently make you feel tired at first once it has been metabolized it will also keep you wide awake.
3. The Biological Clock. We all have our own body clock or circadian rhythm which regulates the body’s sleep/wake cycle. If this biological clock is upset by things like staying up all night partying, studying well into the small hours in college or flying off around the world on business or on holiday, then you will inevitably suffer from sleeping problems while your body clock slowly re-adjusts itself.
4. Activities Prior To Going To Bed. There is a list of things that can produce insomnia if they take place close to bedtime and two items at the top of this list are taking exercise shortly before going to bed or eating a big meal shortly before retiring. These particular activities stimulate the body’s metabolism and keep you awake.
5. Health Problems. There are a large number of health problems that are known to induce insomnia including heart failure, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, ulcers, and Parkinson’s disease. Asthma is also being seen more and more as a cause of insomnia, as is the need for frequent urination, heartburn and chronic pain resulting from things like arthritis and leg cramps. The list of medical conditions which can cause insomnia is very long and also includes other types of sleep disorder such as sleep apnea as well as a range of psychiatric conditions.
6. Emotional Difficulties. Nearly everyone suffers from emotional difficulties at times and this can frequently show itself as anxiety or anger. We also often tend to keep our feelings to ourselves instead of seeking an answer for them and this commonly leads to insomnia.

Insomnia is such a common condition, affecting millions of Americans, yet many people are not aware of the serious consequences of Insomnia.
Commonly referred to as sleeplessness, or lack of sleep, insomnia can lead to severe fatigue, anxiety, depression and lack of concentration. Insomnia is serious, although unlike other diseases it does not kill. But only a sleep deprived person knows how lonely and how terrible this state can be.
Insomnia is a symptom, not a stand-alone diagnosis. By definition, insomnia is "difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, or both." Although most of us know what insomnia is and how we feel and perform after one or more sleepless nights, few seek medical advice. Many people remain unaware of the behavioral and medical options available to treat insomnia.

The Main Insomnia Causes
Worrying about money and paying your bills. Worrying over money is probably the single biggest cause of all known causes of insomnia. If you have a lot of money you may worry over losing it; if you have little money you may worry about how you are going to get more.
Thinking about or being stressed over work.
Experiencing hunger pains in the middle of the night.
Being too warm or too cold as a result of either too little or too much bed covering.
Poor sleep hygiene results in sleeplessness for some. Taking daytime naps, exercising close to bedtime, watching TV late into the night, eating within one to two hours of bedtime and irregular sleep/wake schedules make rest hard to come by. To challenge yourself, keep track of your last week’s bedtimes and awakening times. If there is no thread of consistency, you have a great place to begin. This is especially important for those of you working second and third shifts.
Many people with chronic health conditions also have problems with insomnia. In addition, advanced age and female gender, make individuals more likely to experience insomnia. The cause of chronic insomnia can be complex and often results from a combination of factors.
Excessive use of alocohol. While one glass of wine might help you go to sleep, getting "buzzed" or drunk can be counterproductive. Excessive drinking can cause interrupted sleep and a poor quality of sleep, not to mention the "hungover" feeling you might have the next day. The older you get, the harder it is to "bounce back" after a night of drinking and it could take 24 to 48 hours for your body to release the alcohol in your system.
All day couch potatos or people with a restricted lifestyle also suffer from bouts of insomia. This fact and other research has led sleep professionals to conclude that exercise is an important factor in your day time routine that can lead to sounder sleep at night. Likewise, people who take naps during the day, usually find it hard to get to sleep at night. As a consequence, they then go to bed late since they are not as tired. Not enough sleep at night can lead to fatique in the day time which can bring on the desire to take a nap – a cycle that might be hard for some people to break.

Causes of Insomnia- Factors Responsible For Sleeplessness
In this article we will discuss in brief the various factors that can causes insomnia or sleeplessness. Your night may become a nightmare when you feel difficulty in falling asleep. Major factors that can contribute to sleeplessness are stress, depression, anxiety and alcohol addiction.
1.Stress – Stress is the most important factor causing sleeplessness. If you are the one among those who have been losing sleep because of stress, you should try to find the solution of your stress and insomnia problems. 2.Anxiety – Anxiety is another big problem that can cause insomnia.

4.Alcohol – Initially when a person consumes alcohol in excess, it puts the person to sleep. However, if such binges are happening often enough, the effect will be drastically reversed and the person is bound to have a very fitful sleep. People who suffer from indigestion, gastric or kidney problems, blood pressure, or heart problems are prone to develop insomnia if alcohol is introduced in the diet on a regular basis. It would be good to stay away from alcoholic beverages at least 3-4 hours before going to bed.

Insomnia is reaching epidemic proportions in today’s society. For many of us, daily work has become less physical and mental demands have grown. And yet, our bodies are still driven by physical impulses.
This means that you are likely feeling higher levels of stress than the generations before you, yet you have no way of physically releasing and reducing this stress. Although stress is only one of the several causes of anxiety, it is without a doubt the most significant cause.
Exactly what is insomnia? At its most basic level, insomnia is an inability to fall asleep and stay asleep. Practically everyone has dealt with insomnia before. In many cases, it is only a temporary condition that goes away by itself. But some people suffer from chronic insomnia.
This means that they have been unable to sleep well at least three nights every week for a month or more. About 10 percent of the population has chronic insomnia. They are almost certain to also be suffering the effects of sleep deprivation.
Sometimes it’s really hard to identify what is causing insomnia. Temporary or occasional insomnia is often related to something that you may be doing, like drinking beverages with caffeine or taking medication with side effects. The causes of chronic insomnia are usually more difficult to diagnose. But you can almost certainly count on finding anxiety, stress and depression somewhere in the neighborhood.
Stress, depression and anxiety are often linked to insomnia because our brains are chemically driven. These conditions are related to an imbalance of different neurotransmitters in the brain. The reason that our ability to sleep gets mixed up in all of this is that falling asleep is chemically activated as well. In essence, our brain makes the shift from being awake and active to falling asleep by flipping a chemical switch.
Have you ever been awake at night wishing you could go to sleep, but your mind is going a thousand miles an hour? That’s because for some reason your brain isn’t making the switch. Most often, it’s because you’re still dealing with the stress of the day, or battling anxiety about tomorrow. Depression can also affect the process by making you sleepy at all the wrong times and then keeping you awake when you need to sleep. In short, the chemical transmitters in your brain are completely out of whack. It’s going to take some intentional behavior on your part to put things back in order.
